Hometown Heroes Banner Program
Towanda Borough and the Bradford County Bureau of Veterans' Affairs proudly present the Bradford County Hometown Heroes banner program. The Hometown Heroes Banner program is an ambitious project: a living tribute to soldiers from Bradford County who served or are serving our country in a branch of the military. Each banner will be unique and honor a specific Bradford County soldier including their picture, branch of service, era of service, and hometown in Bradford County. Currently, there is space for banners on street lights throughout our county seat in Towanda, PA.
Once the banners are in place, a dedication ceremony will be held to officially unveil the banners and recognize the soldiers and their families. Ideally, the banners will be installed in time for Memorial Day. The suggested plan is to display the banners until Veterans’ Day. At that time, they would be returned to their families or hometowns for additional display. The time frame will be at the discretion of the planning committee.
The final phase of the project is to create a mural which would depict the efforts of our hometown heroes for a greater length of time. The mural could be generated digitally or created by a local artist. Display sites are up for discussion but could include the side of a building or billboards specially crafted for this display and located at significant entryways into the county.
The community will be invited to be a part of this project by donating to the mural, by sponsoring a banner, or by volunteering to help prepare for the Hometown Hero celebration.
There is a great deal to do over the next several months, and this project would allow individuals, organizations, and businesses throughout the county to come together as a community. The banners and mural will serve as a reminder of our country’s history and what Bradford County has contributed to our nation.
